Custom Carved Jade

Nga Hau E Wha/The Four Winds

This customised sculpture was designed for a family with four children.
It sygnifies their connection to their family land.
They are four individual pieces that when put together, unite as one. Each piece represents the four children of the family.
It is designed after Tāwhirimātea(te atua ka po/blind) and Ngā Hau E Whā(the four winds).
No matter where they go, they'll always be connected.
It's in an easel stand made from native rimu.

About The Stone
This is the stone, which was carefully selected for this piece.
While cutting pounamu, water is used to keep the stone from heating up and to keep the dust down.
Each slab takes 20-30 minutes to cut. Each of the four slabs took a week each to carve with the entire piece taking a total of 4 weeks to complete.
Our greenstone/Jade is nephrite, which on the Mohs scale is recorded to be a 6.0 in hardness.
Due to its hardness we use diamond-impregnated tools to carve our pounamu as diamond is rated 10 on the Mohs scale making it one of the hardest minerals.
