Mangopare Sculpture

This sculpture was a custom order as a 60th birthday gift for a client.

We were tasked with incorporating his whakapapa and life story into a sculpture, handcrafted from high-grade New Zealand Pounamu (Jade).

The recipient of the sculpture grew up in the Hawke's Bay of NZ and is considered a natural leader by his family and peers. The Mangopare design was chosen to symbolise the client which, represents unrelenting determination, courage and leadership. The Mangopare symbol originates from the shape of a Hammerhead shark.

This is the sketch drawn by our carver before starting on the sculpture. The whole design represents the clients journey through life. The bottom Koru represents his whanau, the middle Mangopare symbolises his strength and leadership, while the top of the piece represents him and his refelection on what he has acheived in his life.

The Final Product

Finally, the sculpture was mounted on top of a native Rātā base.

The Māori proverb that accompanies the sculpture is :

~"Kaua e mate wheke me mate ururoa"
